Gregory’s Pond
Raintree boasts an approximately 8.5-acre lake at its heart, surrounded by 105 acres of shared property, including thirty-two acres of wetlands, and is connected to the rest of the Raintree community via our system of trails and paths.
History
Known as Gregory's Pond, the lake dates back to 1837 when it was created to serve the nearby Gayton Coal Mines and Tredegar Iron Works. The lake's eastern bank is formed by the path of the abandoned railway used for transporting coal. The coal mines have a unique history, reportedly contributing to the study of fossil remains and inspiring aspects of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. While formal documentation of this history is lacking, this information is sourced from county records and online research.
Lake Path and Usage
The .53-mile asphalt-paved path running the circumference of Gregory’s Pond provides an ideal route for walking, biking, or running. Bikers can enjoy a smooth ride on the asphalt path, while pedestrians and pets share the space. Please use nearby trash cans for pet waste and litter. Remember to pick up after your pet to prevent environmental damage.
Usage of Gregory’s Pond and our other common areas is governed by our Common Area Regulations.
